Police reach out to elderly

Members of the police were commended by the community for their consistent effort in keeping the elderly safe.

This follows a high-level government and SAPS outreach in Thabong.

The house-to-house visits were organised by the Thabong police and the dignitaries present. It included the minister of Social Development, Lindiwe Zulu, the executive mayor of Matjhabeng, Nkosinjani Speelman and MEC Mamiki Qabathe.

“The Thabong SAPS and Welkom Public Order Policing members went from house to house in a designated area. Elders older than 100 years were given gift hampers,” said Capt. Malebo Khosana, media liaison for the Thabong SAPS.

In her keynote address Zulu encouraged senior citizens to go to old-age homes for safety purposes. She spoke to them about the different forms of abuse against the elderly, women and children.

She encouraged the elders to report abuse to the police. One of the residents, the 101-year-old Malina Thwathwa, commended the police.

“We know how difficult and dangerous your job is. Therefore, we are grateful for your effort, dedication and hard work in ensuring our safety,” said Thwathwa.
