Altogether 12 members of the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) Reaction Team donated groceries to certain needy families in Thabong.

“The hardworking team, led by Sgt Bruce Thesele, put a project in motion to plough back into the community on Wednesday, 6 January,” says Brig. Sam Montsantsi, provincial police spokesperson.

“When pondering on this idea, the Welkom POP Reaction Team thought it worthy to say thank you to the Lord, as it says in Psalm 116:12 (in Sotho): Ke tla busetsang ho Jehova, melemo yohle ya hae e ho nna.”

The Thabong SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit and Capt. Stephen Thakeng assisted in identifying the needy families.

Members started with the Mateye family in Sector 3. This household was identified based on the fact that two elders share a shack with five children and a three-month-old baby. The team saw it fit to donate groceries, electric appliances, vegetables and other household basic necessities. They also gave the family money to buy electricity.

The team proceeded to Orange Grove, where a stay-alone elder also received groceries.

The SAPS members ended in Mshongoville by donating groceries to the Bonokoane family, two elders aged 62 and 60.

According to Thesele, 2020 was a busy, grueling year to work across the Free State and restore order in different towns.

“This project was the team’s opportunity to say thank you to the Lord for protection and strength by giving back to the community we serve,” Thesele said.
