Project to help victims

Rape care packages to be used on first contact with victims of rape formed part of a comprehensive project which culminated during the 16 Days of Activism in December.

Natalee de Lange of the LegalWise Welkom branch started the project.

The packages consisted of a clean panty, sanitary towels, soap, face cloth, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, body lotion, tissues and wet wipes, all neatly packaged in a re-usable bag. The kiddies bag also included a hand-made teddy bear that was knitted by Sally Hosmer (78), the mother of Natalee.

“Various organisations were approached and we were so blessed to receive assistance from Dr Kobus Oberholzer (dentist from Welkom), the Dameskring of Riebeeckstad, the Dutch Reformed Church Dagbreek, various private contributors, family and friends, as well as personal donations from Sara-Marie Coetzee, the staff at LegalWise Bloemfontein and the FS Claims Hub of LegalWise,” says De Lange.

Joanne Dalhouzie, manager of the Vodacom Store in the Goldfield’s Mall, made a large donation to the project.

“They surprised us by not only donating bags to pack the care products in, but they also personally delivered various other exciting products and a huge bag of sanitary towels, which are always welcome when compiling comprehensive care packages for the rape victims. We want to thank Dalhouzie and Dipuo Marumo for their valuable and much appreciated contributions,” says De Lange.

As 16 Days of Activism is an integral part of their annual projects, this year’s project culminated in a workshop relating to Gender Based Violence.

On 2 December the Workshop was presented by De Lange, and various role players from Welkom were present.

“The workshop was a great success and very interactive, with everyone able to voice their concerns and questions – and expert answers were received.”

The rape care packages were handed to Sister Teddy Ceba for use at the Rape Crisis Centre.

The GBV (Gender Based Violence) Forum was well-represented at the workshop which dealt with the sensitive issue of gender-based violence. The participants were:

Past Jackie Botes from Deo Doxa Church, Sister Teddy Ceba of the Rape Crisis Centre, members of the SAPS, Sara-Marie Coetzee (legal counsellor – LegalWise), Leander van Wyk (head of the civil department of Legal Aid Board South Africa), Pastor Gerhard Wessels and his wife, René, from the Dutch Reformed Church Dagbreek, Maryna Ruthenberg (retired magistrate) and representatives of Huis Eden, Virginia and The Seed of Africa.
