Residents grab ‘last chance’ to shop

Since the announcement of the 21-day lockdown, South Africans have flocked en masse to the shops to buy food and other essential goods.

In the streets of Welkom were queues of people waiting to do their last-minute shopping on Thursday (26/03) and Friday (27/03).

This was also the case on Monday (30/03) to Wednesday (01/04) during the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) payouts.

An unusually high number of beneficiaries made use of several points such as supermarkets to withdraw their monthly grant.

This came after grants were paid out earlier by the Department of Social Development to limit the number of people in one place, due to the coronavirus.

Taxis may only operate at set times as part of government’s effort to curb the spread of the virus.

On Monday (30/03) Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa said the coronavirus is very real and it poses a great danger to everyone in all societies.

“Some people may think this disease is something that does not concern them and that it will never affect them, that it is something they only read about in newspapers or the social media or see reports about on television.”

“It infects the rich and the poor, young and old, black and white, those who live in the cities and those who live in the rural areas,” said Ramaphosa.

He urged all South Africans to abide by the rules and measures that were put in place for their own safety.
