Retired teacher starts support group for autism awareness

A retired special needs teacher from Thabong, Jeanette Sebotsa, has founded Karabo Ya Sichabo – Answer to the Nation, a support group for autism awareness in Matjhabeng.

Sebotsa started teaching as a special needs educator in Thabong in 1982. During those years of teaching she became acutely aware of a real need among people in the Matjhabeng community for autism awareness.

“Many times, people hide these children away. They are labelled as being misbehaved, or problem children, or even demon possessed or worse. They are not given the attention or educational opportunities they need,” she says.

The support group will be formally established on 18 March at the Dirisanong Primary School in Thabong.

The meeting will start at 09:00.

“I have registered the group as a non-profit organisation, and I have the support of Social Development. A social worker, Sello Mokhotu, will be working with me,” she says.
