Rotary groups join forces to help

Imagine the amazement and even excitement when the innovative 90 litre Hippo Rollers were introduced to the dwellers of the informal settlements around Welkom.

From Monday, 2 March, until Saturday, 7 March, members of international Rotary groups, including Australia, did humanitarian work in informal settlements in Kutloanong, Thabong, Bronville and Hani Park.

Joining hands with Goldfields Sunset and Flamingo Welkom Rotary groups, as well as other community centres, they spent the ten days serving the communities, offering Waste to toys workshops, donating children’s tables and chairs, cups, plates and carpets to two crèches and distributing Hygiene Care Kits to teenage girls.

The group also handed out the Lasher Garden Kits donated by a fellow Rotarian, Greg Cryer, and handed out 80 Hippo Rollers.

“Rotary Clubs across the waters teamed up with us and provided struggling communities in our area with some relief from their daily lives. No longer will township residents have to carry fresh water for kilometers, as they have received beautiful 90 litre rolling water drums, known as Hippo Rollers, to make this task easier. This is truly one of the more special Proudly South African products we have seen in a long time,” says Dulcie Harris of the Flamingo Rotary Club in Welkom.

She says ex-Welkomite and true friend to the Goldfields community, Charmaine Wheatley of Australia, who is a member of the Rotary E-Club of South Africa, Sunshine Coast Rotary Community Corps and the organiser of the 2020 Humanitarian Trip to South Africa, is the power house behind this specific project.

“Charmaine gathered volunteers from across Australia who made up her 2020 humanitarian team, bringing them to South Africa to give service above self to our struggling communities. This team has worked tirelessly for a year, raising funds to make this trip possible,” says Harris.
