Sisters reach out with campaign

“We started the #Albinism is Beautiful campaign, to inform people who don’t have enough knowledge of this rare genetic condition, and to make them aware that it is not a disease,” says Brown Zongolwa (29) founder of the campaign.

Brown realized that people must be educated more about albinism.

In her family they have a member with the condition and that taught them a lot, which they would like to share now.

Brown and her sister Xolizwa Zongolwa (16), a learner of the Riebeeckstad High School and second princess of Miss Moqhaka, are the founders of the campaign. They hope and dream to assist all people with albinism to make their lives a bit easier.

“People with albinism are normal human beings like you and me. They function in a normal way.”

“They unfortunately need more skin protection due to the reduced amount of melanin in their skin. Due to the skin pigmentation, they easily suffer from cracked skin,” she says.

The basic needs for living with albinism is indeed expensive. They need SPF 50 sunscreens and lip balms daily and must use proper sunglasses to protect their eyes.

The first #Albinism is Beautiful event was held in December last year.

Over 40 people attended and the event was a huge success.

Families have to share their stories and needs.

The two sisters hope that this will be more than just an annual event and invite the community who would like to get involved to call Brown on 072-505-5470.
