Squatters face uncertain future
Vista Editorial logo

The plight of the illegal squatters living on Harmony ground in Alma Road remains a sequence of unfortunate events.

When the executive Mayor, Nkosinjani Speelman (politician), gave the squatters permission to live on Harmony ground in February this year, Harmony (the legal owners) immediately obtained an eviction order.

Within that week (March) Harmony retracted the order.

Much talk and vague negotiations down the line, Harmony re-issued the eviction notice, and the people had to be off the land by 14 October.

Almost immediately Harmony retracted, and again the people may stay.

(Sihle Maake, spokesperson for Harmony, says Harmony has put a stop to the planned evacuation of the illegal occupants until they have a signed agreement from the municipality and the premier).

In August council determined that Speelman had no mandate to accept Harmony’s offer of land and that he (Speelman) must find private funding to service the land before it will contemplate the gift.

Hence the current discussions between Harmony, Speelman and the premier.

One must remember there is a clear distinction between the mayor (single politician) and the council (a collective administration).

Vista understands that Harmony agreed about a month ago to move the squatters to a place where it was environmentally safer for them to live.

This plan has since then died a silent death, and the squatters remain in an unsafe environment, near a tailings dam.

And again everything is on hold as the politicians contemplate the future of the squatters, who in the first instance were placed in this precarious position by the mayor.
