Stolen cell helps police

A stolen iPhone led the Virginia police to uncover a stash of stolen goods, explosives and illegal ammunition at a house in Zondereind Street, following a robbery at a liquor store.

The owner of the house was arrested for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, the possession of suspected stolen property and the unlawful possession of explosives. On Sunday (09/02) at about 10:30 Linus Liquor Store in Virginia was robbed.

“Amongst the stolen items was an iPhone, which was tracked to a address in Zondereind Street, Harmony,” says Capt. Malebo Khosana, Thabong cluster corporate communication and liaison officer.

The police arrived at the address and found the house abandoned, and the doors standing open.

“There were signs that people might have fled the scene or were hiding. The officers saw suspicious items in the house, and called for backup. The Welkom Flying squad, K9 and MJ Security responded. The owner of the house was found, and gave permission for it to be searched,” say Khosana.

A getaway vehicle, numerous sets of number plates, cigarettes, liquor, jewellery, a Ruger pistol, seven rounds of live ammunition and a magazine, one empty R5 magazine, explosives and cell phones were confiscated. The owner of the house could not provide an explanation for the items being found there and was arrested.

“The jewellery at the scene was positively identified as jewellery stolen in Welkom from the Sterns Jewellery Shop on Saturday (08/02).

“Two vehicles, an Audi and a Toyota bakkie, were also seized for being involved in the commission of crime.

“The investigation continues and a number of suspects are still at large,” says Khosana.
