‘Stop mob acts’

Vigilantism will not be tolerated or condoned by the police.

So says Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Baile Motswenyane, following the death of a 45-year-old alleged house robber, after he was assaulted by a mob in Meloding, Virginia on Sunday, 2 February.

The community alleged that the man had tried to break into a house in Stilte Park using an iron rod.

“They chased him and then allegedly assaulted him with a sjambok.”

The police arrested the man, charging him with malicious da-mage to property.

Thabong Cluster media liaison officer, Capt Malebo Khosana, says officers were alerted to a dead man in the cells later that day.

“The emergency services were summoned and the suspect was certified dead.”

The Meloding Police are investiga-ting a case of murder.

“We do not condone mob justice. This barbaric act should be stopped in all our communities. No-one has the right to infringe on anyone’s rights,” said Motswenyane.
