Students assisted with tablets, data
  • CUT sponsors tablets worth R5 million
  • CUT aslo gives data worth over R19 000

At an estimated cost of R5 million, the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) has provided students in Welkom and Bloemfontein with tablet devices. This will enable them to access learning content on platforms such as eThuto and Blackboard.

The university purchased 5 000 tablet devices for both the Bloemfontein and Welkom campusses. More than 500 tablets were distributed in Welkom and surrounding towns.

The university also acquired and loaded 19 383 data bundles for students,” says Prof. Solomon (Oupa) Makola, campus director: Welkom. Staff who are working remotely have also been provided with data bundles.

“All students in need of a device were encouraged to make a request for one. Initially we targeted those who do not receive National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding, and do not have funding to obtain these devises.

“However, we realised there was a greater need and have enabled any student in need to be able to apply for a tablet,” says Makola.

“We still have a few devices at our disposal and students in need can still make a request,” he says.

Makola says these laptops do not become the property of the students.

“If they are not returned, the student will be billed on their student accounts.

“It is important that students ensure that the university have their correct contact details. This will also assist in them receiving their data for online classes. Covid-19 is our new normal and we are doing our best to adjust to circumstances.

“Things are progressing well despite the difficult challenges we find ourselves in.

“There are minor hiccups here and there, which we are able to resolve as we proceed,” says Makola.
