The police are concerned about the high levels of crime being reported at Star Diamonds outside Theunissen.

Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale, the district commissioner of the Lejweleputswa SAPS, says these crimes include robbery and the possession of suspec- ted stolen items.

“The crimes became more prevalent after the closure of this mine when criminals started to target the structures and facilities for scrap like iron, corrugated iron, doors, poles and other items that could be sold for cash at scrap metal dealers or other informal buyers,” says Molale.

The security personnel employed at this mine are targeted by the criminals who attack them to get to the scrap metals.

“Criminals threaten the security personnel with death if they do not comply with their demands. This criminality renders the mine useless for the resumption of economic activities in the future, diminishing prospects of employment in our communities,” said Molale.

The police in Theunissen made a breakthrough when they arrested nine suspects linked to separate cases of the possession of suspected stolen property, theft as well as contravention of the Disaster Management Act 2020 (failure to confine at residential place). One of the suspects (55) was arrested for transporting corrugated iron from the mine. He will appear in the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court on Monday (03/08).

In two cases involving eight suspects who were arrested for the possession of devil forks, wire mesh cage, steel doors, poles and hammers while they were also still on the mine premises, the dockets were struck off the court role. In another case, security personnel tracked down a truck off-loading scrap metals at a scrapyard in the Welkom Industrial area. They alerted the Welkom police.

This was linked to an incident at the mine where security guards were overpowered and held hostage for an entire night while criminals stole me- tals. The security guards were released without being har- med. The two suspects were arrested, and the truck was confiscated by the police.

“I make a humble plea to scrap metal dealers to assist us in stopping this vandalism at the mine premises. They must refuse scrap metals which has been gained through criminal activity. In this way we will close the market for these hoodlums. I appeal to the community to report any suspicious people involved in vandalising our firms and companies,” he said.
