Uproar over poles
Pole fracas continues
Pole fracas continues

The fibre optic pole fiasco continues, and a decision to now paint the poles a colour and then place solar lights on top of each pole, has further enraged residents.

“The skew poles and dangling criss-cross wires already make Welkom look like a slum area. Painting the poles and putting lights on them will make our neighbourhoods look like a circus. This will definitely devalue our property,” an angry resident told Vista.

At a meeting held between the contractor and three ward councillors of the four affected wards, this “solution” was as such adopted as the way forward.

Only one ward councillor, Schalk van Schalkwyk (Ward 32) strongly opposed it during the meeting. He has put the proposal to his constituents, who have objected in the strongest terms.

“The people don’t want the poles,” he told Vista.

The newly appointed municipal manager, Zingisa Tindleni, has acknowledged receipt of an enquiry sent by Vista. She has committed to investigate and find an amicable solution.

Vista asked Tindleni why the contractor, who does not have a written contract with council, is allowed to continue to erect the poorly constructed and haphazard grids with untreated poles all over Welkom.

Vista also asked why no council sitting or decision has ever been taken. There are no written project specifications, and also the municipal systems act and integrated development plan (IDP) have not been applied, yet the project continues unabated. Furthermore, Vista asked where the contractor published his public participation notices (as required by local government regulations) and also where he submitted the environmental impact study (as required by national law).

A survey done among more than 2 000 of the residents in Jan Celliers Park (Ward 32) indicates that 95,3% are vehemently opposed to this. The only ward councillor to inform his constituents about the project, was Van Schalkwyk. He also convened a meeting, where there was angry opposition.

“My constituents say bury the cables, or see them in court.”

  • The environmental act states that any commercial or industrial activity needs to have an environmental impact study completed before the project can be approved.
