Waste not, want not

Trevor Hattingh, Hennenman:

South Africa is fast becoming a water shortage country, but judging by the water wastage in Matjhabeng, it seems that there is plenty in this area.

These photographs were taken on 26/10/2019 in Jasons Street in Riebeeckstad. Travelling from Hennenman every day, I have noticed this for approximately three months.

Either the residents do not feel it their duty to report the leakage in front of their gate or the disabled Matjhabeng municipality feels the wastage does not concern them.

Calculated at 2 litre per 60 seconds equals to 86 400 litre per 30 day period, equals to 259 200 litre wastage of drinkable water in three months. Considering our rate per litre is R1,70 (according to my municipal account), this is a loss of revenue of R440 640 for the three month period.

No wonder this municipality has had one of the worst audits in this country for the past few years. My calculation is based on only one leak.

I have noticed at least five bad leakages in Riebeeckstad alone and this incompetent municipality has not even noticed one. The loss of revenue you can recuperate somehow, but the loss in drinkable water, impossible.

A little further up the same road, I reported a leak about two years ago, where the water was coming out of the ground at 20 times the capacity as in Jasons Street and the water trail was followed for 3 km. It took more than 3 months to fix this leak as you did not have the money at the time, as reported, to buy a T-piece. That T-piece could not have cost more than R7 000. Since I noticed it, it took over a year to close the hole. Through incompatible workmanship, it is leaking again. Matjhabeng must have an underground fountain of water available, as there is water seeping from the ground all over town.

This is evidence that municipal management is incapable of running the town. It would be in the interest of the people if all resign.
