Whistle blown on crime

The Slyza Tsotsi Campaign has been initiated by concerned residents in Reitz Park, Welkom, after an increase in crime in this neighbourhood.

Mosito Ntsasa, the initiater of the project, says he is launching it to the community from 1 to 3 June.

“I have had 2 500 whistles sponsored by a business in Koppie Alleen Road, and each household will receive a whistle as part of the campaign. The residents can use the whistles to alert their neighbours of crime,” says Ntsasa.

The launch will culminate in a church service at the Dutch Reformed Church on 3 June. The whistles and T-shirts will be handed out from 1 to 3 June.

The motto of the campaign is “My neighbour’s keeper”.

“Since the establishment of the illegal squatter camp, which formed part of the Alma Road and Harmony Gold land grab two months ago, the residents have perceived an increase in crime.

“We want our community to stand united against crime. We are getting a lot of support from Cllr Schalk van Schalkwyk, and the Community Policing Forum (CPF) is involved. We need local businesses to become involved, and we need a donation of T-shirts,” says Ntsasa.
