Year’s young sports stars crowned

The SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year Awards for Vista and Kroonnuus, was held on Friday, 22 November, at Digger’s Inn in Welkom.

Nine young Vista sports stars were honoured at the event.

The guest speakers for the day were Wynand Pienaar from the Griffons as well as Runaldi de Beer from Spec-Savers.

“The awards ceremony was a success with 55 attendees,” says Lynn Landman of SuperSport.

The Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vista is Miné de Klerk (16). Miné excells in athletics, netball and tennis.

She is a learner of the Goudveld-Hoërskool.

Her top achievement, which clinched her first place, was the silver medal she got for South Africa at the African Youth and Junior Championships in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Miné was a member of the SA Youth athletics team. She obtained her silver medal in u.18 shot-put and she also got a fourth place in discus u.18.

This 16-year-old is a member of the Free State u.16A netball team which took part in the South African championships in Boksburg this year and she is a member of the Lejweleputswa tennis team.

In second place was the 15-year-old Elzandri Nortje, a learner of the Goudveld-Hoërskool.

In 2019 Elzandri took part in tennis, squash, hockey and cricket (boys and girls). Elzandri is in the SA schools u.19B girls cricket team and the captain of her school’s first cricket team (boys and girls). She represented FS Women’s Cricket against KZN in October 2019 during the SA Women’s Cricket league.

In May 2019, Elzandri was awarded the best u.19 girls’ cricket player at the Free State Cricket Union’s annual awards in Bloemfontein.

Elzandri played u.15 Lejweleputswa tennis, and is captain of this team. She is the no.1 player in her age group at school and district level.

She plays u.16 Free State squash and is the no. 1 player in her age group. She was also the top player in the district and captain of the FS team.

She also plays Northern Free State hockey and captains the u.15 team.

In third place is the 12-year-old Mienke Nieuwenhuis, a learner of Welkom-Volkskool. In 2019 Mienke took part in, and excelled in, tennis, netball, hockey and athletics.
