Businessman in court on charge of corruption

A local businessman (40) appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 29 January, on a charge of corruption after he was arrested by the Hawks.

Representatives of the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in Kroonstad conducted a search and seizure operation at a cellphone and sound outlet in Bethlehem on Tuesday, 28 January.

According to WO Lynda Steyn, spokesperson for the Hawks, counterfeit cellphone spares to the value of R850 000 were confiscated.

After the operation, the businessman contacted a Sars employee and offered him R5 000 for his confiscated goods.

The employee reported the matter, after which the Hawks acted on the information received.

The businessman was arrested when he handed the money to the Sars employee. His bail was set at R2 000. He has to report to the Bethlehem Police Station once a week.

The case has been postponed to 27 February for further investigation.
