Bypassed electricity meters investigated

The pre-paid electricity meters of four flats of the fire brigade have been tampered with.

Isoldé Laesecke of AfriForum said it was found during a routine inspection that these residents have been using electricity at no cost as the the system has been bypassed.

The four occupants of the flats are all employees of the Dihlabeng Municipality.

Tshediso Maitse, spokesperson for the municipality, confirmed that the inspection took place as part of ongoing inspections in all municipal buildings.

“The aim is also to roll out these inspections to private homes to curb the theft of electricity.”

Maitse said the municipal officials implicated have been referred to the legal section of the municipality for further investigation and to institute disciplinary steps.

“The municipality views these misconducts in a very serious light and will leave no stone unturned – and there will be no favouritism.”
