Diner a tasty haven for car lovers

The Roadside Diner just outside Bethlehem is so much more than your run-of-the-mill coffee shop or restaurant.

In just a short amount of time, it has already become known as “the restaurant with all the vintage cars”.

The heart behind the Roadside Diner, however, is what makes it such an interesting concept.

The amount of detail evident in every facet of this mecca for vintage car lovers bears testament to the months of hard work owners Paula and Chris du Toit put into this endeavour.

While it can be difficult for a coffee shop to set itself apart from the rest, the Du Toits have managed to create a space which can truly be enjoyed by all – sentimental souls will delight in the nostalgia, while classic car enthusiasts will consider it a cosy haven.

The story behind the cars

While some vintage car collectors hide their vehicles in storage, Chris decided to put his collection on display for others to appreciate.

Not only does it serve as a landmark and advertisement for the Roadside Diner, it also creates a lasting impression.

“It is a way to eternalise the cars so that you can look back and see what the cars looked like years ago,” says Chris.

On the menu

While this establishment is well worth the visit for the atmosphere and decor alone, the menu offers an interesting variety of meals. The options vary from traditional boerekos such as bobotie and rice, offal, marrowbones on toast and pap and kaiings, to comfort food such as burgers, pizza and pasta.

Few things go better with a juicy burger piled with delicious toppings than a creamy milkshake. If you have not yet tried their speciality crazy milkshakes and burgers, you are missing out.

All the meals are freshly prepared while you wait.

Paula says they aim to please and believe in paying personal attention to the needs of each customer.

“Ask us to prepare a special dish that is not on the menu. We will try anything that is within our abilities,” says Paula.

They serve hearty, wholesome and aesthetically pleasing food.

Each outdoor seating place has its own “braaier”, so that customers can braai meat ordered from the restaurant.
