Dumping site a health risk

Numerous residents from Bethlehem were concerned about their health during the past weekend, Friday (11/05) to Sunday (13/05), due to a fire that kept smoldering at the dumping site in Môrelig.

According to Tshediso Maitse, spokesperson of the Dihlabeng Municipality, their report indicated that people who make a living from recycling, burnt the plastic covering of wires in search of copper and in their attempt to extinguish the fire, they used garbage. Some of the garbage started to burn slowly until the fire grew.

“Our fire and emergency section were on hand to fight the fire. The fire was not easy to fight because it was coming from deep under the refuse and water could not reach the source,” said Maitse.

According to Isoldé Laesecke, chairperson of the AfriForum Bethlehem branch, it is the result of inadequate control at the dumping site.

“The people who recycle should be trained and have the right equipment,” Laesecke said. AfriForum starts with their national campaign this week to audit dumping sites.

The aim of the campaign is to ensure that waste management services are provided to communities. AfriForum invites everyone to be part of the audit. Dial 083-956-4221.
