Expo judges needed

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is being held on the Qwaqwa Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) on Saturday, 27 July, from 07:00.

Support is being requested from the community in the form of judges to assess the learners’ projects, sponsors, as well as entertainers such as Physics teachers, magicians and puppeteers. These volunteers will be involved in the event from 14:00 to 14:40 to keep learners entertained before their prize giving.

To volunteer as a judge, contact Dr Lauren Sacht via email on laurensacht.expo@gmail.com or send a WhatsApp to 073-357-4379.

Judges need to have knowledge in their field and be willing to give of their time. Some of the judging fields are: Medicine, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science (such as Soil and Water Sciences), renewable and non-renewable energy, Engineering (chemical, civil, electrical, aeronautical), Mathematics, Plant Sciences, Physics and Social Sciences (like Psychology, Human Settlements, Education Studies).

A compulsory judges training session will be held at the Bethlehem Voortrekker High School on 13 July at 09:00. This is where the prospective judge will be taught how to score projects. Volunteers do not need to have judged before, as full training will be given. Judges who have been judging for three years consecutively can put their name down to judge at the finals in Boksburg.

The organisers are also asking the community to help by sponsoring items like pens, caps and bags for 280 learners. Also, prizes for first and second place in various categories need to be sponsored. Sponsors can also contact Sacht.

“We would very much like to encourage learners to participate and offer them these incentives, as a lot of work goes into their projects,” said Sacht.

“In this technological age we need to support our learners to move out of their comfort zones, and we need to show them from early on how amazing the sciences and technology can be. The Eskom Expo is a wonderful opportunity, and Eskom takes this Expo from regional to provincial level, and then they have their own staff who take the finalists to America or other countries to showcase their projects.”

Bursary prizes, both local and international are handed out at the finals in Boksburg to winners in the different categories.

“We are hoping to make the 2019 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists the most vibrant learning curve for our learners and we need your help to do so,” said Sacht.
