Expo to inspire scientists

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is being held at the Qwaqwa University on Saturday, 3 August, from 07:00.

The organisers are looking for support from the community in the form of judges to assess the learners’ projects, sponsors for prizes and entertainers – such as physics teachers, magicians and puppeteers – from 14:00 to 14:40 on the this day to keep the learners entertained before the prize-giving ceremony.

Judges need to have sufficient knowledge in their field and be willing to give of their time.

Some of the judging fields are medical, agricultural, veterinary, chemistry and biochemistry, computer sciences, earth science (soil and water sciences), renewable and non-renewable energy, engineering (chemical, civil, electrical and aeronautical), mathematics, plant sciences, physics and social sciences (psychology, human settlements and education studies).

A compulsory training session for judges will be held at the Voortrekker High School in Bethlehem on Saturday, 13 July, at 09:00.

This is where prospective judges will be taught how to score projects.

As full training will be given, prior judging experience is not necessary.

People who have judged for three consecutive years can also apply to judge at the final event in Boksburg.

Members of the community are urged to support the event by sponsoring pens, caps and bags for 280 learners. Sponsors for first and second prizes in the different categories are also needed.

Prospective judges can contact Dr. Lauren Sacht on laurensacht. expo@gmail.com, or send a WhatsApp message to 073-357-4379.

“We are hoping to make this Eskom Expo for Young Scientists a vibrant learning curve for our learners, and we need your help to do so,” said Sacht.
