False charges an offence

It has come to the attention of members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit within the cluster of Bethlehem that there is a trend of people (mostly women) who lay charges of rape and other sexual offences that do not exist.

Such accusations merely seek to spite or get revenge for some omission by those being accused.

Cases of this nature are whereby parties are having intimate relationships and when the relationship turns sour one party will come to the police station after a quarrel or disagreement and lay a false charge of rape.

In most cases a woman will cry rape and later withdraw charges and admit that she was angry at the boyfriend, husband or ex.

Victims suspiciously sabotage the case or accept favours from the suspect or family in order to withdraw a case.

This observation does not in any way give perpetrators the right to rape. Men must note that, regardless of the nature of their relationship, no one has the right to impose themselves on another without their consent. It is illegal and a serious violation of one’s privacy.

The police call on all sectors of society to keep spreading this message until they note collective behavioural change.

“Those who lay false charges must be warned that lying under oath is a criminal offence. You will be charged with perjury. It takes special skills and scarce resources to investigate rape,” warns Bethlehem Cluster Commander Maj. Gen. Jan Tsotetsi.

“Rape remains one of the most sensitive crimes that can be committed against a human being.

“It must never be used to settle scores with partners and ex-partners.”
