Officers end up in cuffs

Two police officers were arrested after demanding money from a bus driver and his passengers travelling from Gauteng on the N1.

During a roadblock conducted on Tuesday, 20 July, a passenger bus traveling from Gauteng to the Free State was stopped to ensure that all passengers had a valid travel document according to the Covid-19 level 4 lockdown regulations.

It came to light that not all of the passengers had valid documents. Officers asked for a bribe of R200 to allow the bus to continue on its way.

The driver complied with demands and left. However, he then contacted his head office and explained the situation. The incident was subsequently reported to the police.

Police members stopped the bus at Kroonstad, where the passengers confirmed the incident.

Two officers from Parys were arrested and were expected to appear in the Parys Magistrate’s Court.
