Rider speeds

Yo-mari Jonker (31) from Bethlehem achieved second place at the national competition of the South African Western Mounted Games Association (SAWMGA).

She came second in the speedball event on level 1. This is one of the 13 events that she had to complete in with her horse, Picasso.

The competition took place from 21 to 23 September in Parys, Free State. The 13 items that the riders competed in, is: barrel racing, keyhole, hurry scurry, pole bending (poles 1 and 2), quadrangle, bi-rangle, single stake, figure 8 flags, figure 8 stake, speedball, big-T and speedbarrels.

Jonker says she was very young when she first got on a horse.

“I grew up on a farm and it was just part of my life,” she said.

She says the most important aspect of choosing a horse to compete with, is speed.

The Free State team, which consisted of 87 riders including Jonker, achieved overall second place out of all nine provinces in the country.
