Sailors win in Malawi

Two sailors from the Athlone Yacht Club in Bethlehem participated in the 2019 Malawi Sailing Marathon and placed first in the Hobie 16 class.

Hilton Johnson and Dixon Odendaal took part in this international marathon which covers approximately 500 km of Lake Malawi.

They participated in the non-spinnaker category. This means that they did not have an extra sail to make downwind sailing easier.

The race started on Sunday 4 August from Cape Mclear on the lake.

They followed a six-day route starting in the southern parts of Lake Malawi, following the western coast, then across to Likoma Island and ended at Chinteche Beach.

Their boats were transported to Malawi, where they had to assemble it and survive the gruelling six-day race through water, wind and sunshine.

What makes this award special for the club is that they have both been commodores (presidents) of the Athlone Yacht Club.

The club welcomed them back with sail boat trophies made from sleeper and cedar wood.
