Const. Jani Elvis Mofokeng (38) has been arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime investigation team last week for his alleged involvement in a botched business robbery in Bethlehem that dates back to March 2019.

WO Lynda Steyn, spokesperson of the Hawks in the Free State, says Mofokeng was a member of the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit when he was arrested and briefly appeared in court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

While details are sketchy, he is alleged to have driven the get-away vehicle in a botched business robbery where the business owner was shot in the back during a struggle with two of the robbers. Mofokeng, as a result, is facing a charge of attempted murder. He will reappear in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court today (07/08). The Hawks are yet to comment on the latest development pertaining to Mofokeng’s accomplice/s.

In January 2019, the Free State provincial police commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe, condemned the involvement of police officers in corrupt and criminal activities. He said one of the measures set in place to curb this problem is the expeditious process which falls under the SAPS Discipline Regulations.

The process was put into effect by the former Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko in 2016 and Sempe is adamant the process is continuing to yield results.

“Any allegation of that particular nature is investigated swiftly.”
