110 speeding tickets issued

Traffic on West Coast roads fluctuated over the Easter weekend. Des Paton, regional director of Provincial Traffic Services on the West Coast, says traffic was quiet on Thursday 1 April, but picked up on Friday 2 April. An incoming total of 900 cars per hour was recorded on the R27, on the N7 a total of 800 per hour and on the R45, 600 cars per hour.

Paton adds that on Saturday and Sunday the roads in the towns were busy.

On Monday morning around 10:00 traffic volumes started to pick up again as people made their way back to their destinations.

On the R27, 850 cars per hour were recorded, 800 cars per hour were recorded on the N7 and 650 cars per hour recorded on the R45.

“Overall it was a good Easter weekend,” said Paton. “There were minor accidents with no serious injuries, unlike fatalities between Klawer and Vanrhynsdorp and between Velddrif and Piketberg.”

Paton says most road users were obedient to the rules of the roads, but some took chances and were on the road between curfew hours. “A total of about 110 speeding tickets were also written for road users on the R45.”

Paton concludes traffic officials were visible, on high alert and ready for the Easter weekend.
