Sometimes you just need some height to gain a new perspective on life.

Climbing a mountain can help to clear your head, but if you’re living on the West Coast, mountains, even high hills, are in short supply.

No problem – soon you can ascend the “biggest chair in Africa”, according to Fransie Rossouw, owner of Plaasmol farm stall, just outside Hopefield.

At a height of 11,5 m (the seat is 6,13 m high), this chair will dethrone the current highest chair (9 m high) located at Rooiberg Winery near Robertson.

“It was quite accidental how it happened,” explains Rossouw. Her brother, Burger van den Berg’s wife, Elsabé, also fondly known as Poplap, celebrates her birthday in August. Burger didn’t know what to get his wife, so he decided to build her a chair – a really big one. The chair is still under construction and will be ready for the official opening festivities planned for 3 October.

It weighs a hefty 2,7 tonne and 40 litres of paint were needed for the first coat.

“There will be a ladder for people to climb onto the chair. You can even see Table Mountain from there,” said Rossouw. She added that a safety feature will also be installed
