Air Force members lend helping hand

Since the national lockdown was announced members at Air Force Base Langebaanweg have helped their neighbouring community.

Residents living near the Air Force base have various challenges, many having to hitchhike to the nearest town 20 km away and often earning their living by doing piecemeal work such as garden services and domestic work.

Since the start of the lockdown most community members have been left without basic living needs and, as a result, the members of the AFB Langebaanweg under the Base Command Council (BCC) saw the need to lend a helping hand.

The BCC donated R6 000 from its fund, while others contributed to the cause by giving dry food and food parcels, electricity units as well as gas to those who are using gas stoves.

Meals as well as clothes were donated by some members.

The chaplain of the base and the Corporate Communications section have also been teaching residents the importance of Covid-19 safety measures such as social distancing as some residents were trying to help other neighbouring farms on weekends.

Sahara Gertse, a domestic worker, said the support the Air Force members have given has been a very big help, for she has not earned a living during lockdown.

Anna Bester said she appreciated everything, and without the support from the base she and hers would have perished.

Pensioner Jakoba Hanekom agreed and was especially grateful for the fortnightly food parcels she received.

Percy Williams, who renders garden services to Air Force Base Langebaanweg members, said due to movement restrictions the impact of the help from the members had been a blessing.

The base is also supplying meals from a soup kitchen in Green Village, which is working in cooperation with the Department Social Development and Councillor Eventhia Vaughan, Deputy Mayor of Saldanha Bay.

The members of AFB Langebaanweg stick to the slogan of the South African Air Force, “Ours is to serve with discipline, dignity, professionalism and patriotism.”
