Artist inspired by coastal surrounds

Growing up in an artistic home definitely rubbed off on local artist Hanli Theron.

She says she always knew art would be her purpose and passion. “After years of teaching art classes from home, raising children and working different jobs, I had the opportunity to create an environment that fulfilled my vision.”

Theron was born and raised in Durban, where she completed high school and later obtained her BA Fine Arts degree at Stellenbosch University in 1984. She moved around and lived in different places, but finally nestled on the West Coast in 1991.

The artist explained it was in 1996 when, with her father, she built The Pumpkin House in Langebaan, which was initially started as an accommodation establishment. She then took the decision years later to turn the space into her own beautiful haven of art.

“At The Pumpkin House, I offer sketch classes, art classes, art workshops and art exhibitions. Artists and the public are invited to participate in various activities and become part of the Langebaan art scene. The Pumpkin House is also part of the Langebaan Art Route as well as the West Coast art Route.”

Theron’s vision is to create a space for art, for those who produce it, for those who appreciate it, and creating a platform where artist and public can meet.

She explains herself as an experimental artist using any medium and technique which comes to mind. “I work mainly with a theme and my inspiration mostly comes from the ocean and lagoon.”

The pencil is Theron’s favourite medium. She does a lot of drawing and sketching, alternatively working with water-based paints such as watercolours and acrylic paints. She says she often takes part in open water swimming and draws her inspiration from there. “This fascinating world of water is a huge source of inspiration. I often paint with my hands and fingers, with a cloth or an old credit card to translate the total interaction of my memory with the medium.”

Theron believes that in current challenging times people have to reconnect with their imagination, create new thoughts and inspire others.

“This is why art is so important.”
