Covid-19 sees more animals at local SPCA

VREDENBURG – Hard economic times have hit many local residents, and it seems their pets are especially affected by the tighter budgets.

According to the Swartland & West Coast SPCA the number of dogs and cats taken in at the start of the Covid-19 lockdown has skyrocketed.

In April, 59 pets from the Saldanha Bay municipal area were taken in. In May, 228 animals were taken in and 107 in June.

The numbers for the Swartland area are almost similar, with 78 in April, 142 in May and 150 taken in, in June alone.

“We have completed another month of the Covid-19 pandemic, and again we took in more than the average number of animals in June,” the team pointed out on their local SPCA social media. “Common sense dictates this trend will continue, as the harshness of a failing economy puts more and more animals at risk because their owners no longer have the means to feed them.”

According to Louise van Zyl the Vredenburg site can accommodate only 21 animals at a time. “We do our very best to find homes for as many animals as possible,” she explained. “Support has been good, and we have had several adoptions recently.”

In a bid to help financially struggling local pet owners the SPCA also donates pet food to residents. Inspectors carry out regular checks at homes.

Van Zyl says this aid is dependent on the various donations the society receives, which can then be distributed to struggling owners.

Anyone looking to adopt a four-legged friend can contact the SPCA team on 022 289 0998 (Vredenburg) or 022 492 2781 (Darling).

Van Zyl says residents looking to adopt should visit the branch to meet the pets.

An adoption fee is sought, and an inspector will need to do a home visit before the adoption is approved.
