Diazville teacher a finalist for Teacher of the Year

Ronald Kock, educator at Diazville High School in Saldanha, has created a method to record lessons during lockdown, which earned him a place as finalist in the national Teacher of the Year awards.

The Super Schools competition is presented by News24. Kock is one of five finalists selected out of 200 educators across all nine provinces.

The innovative teacher’s simple yet very effective invention helps to record lessons by mounting a cellphone on top of a box. Slits are cut into the outside of the box to become little holders to keep the phone in place.

A page is then placed inside the box, where lessons can be conducted.

Much in the style of veteran physics‚ maths and chemistry teacher William Smith’s educational television programme, learners can see how problems can be worked out in real time.

“As a creative person it stimulated me to find a solution to the problem,” Kock told Weslander earlier this year. “I did some research and managed to put something together through a few modifications and application software that is freely available.”

According to News24 the competition is a way to celebrate teachers who go beyond the call of duty to make sure their pupils continue learning.

All the finalists’ stories were featured on the News24 website. Readers can vote for Kock at bit.ly/voteforronald
