Fish factory tournament winners

The 32nd SA Fish Industries tournament thrilled spectators with electrifying sportsmanship at the Smit Sports Grounds in Velddrif on Friday 25 October and Saturday 26 October.

The tournament included different sports, like rugby, soccer and netball.

Sea Harvest was crowned as the winners of the rugby competition. They played against Sea Pride in the final match of the day and won with 27-3.

The soccer team that was victorious was the Viking team while Nossab were the runners up.

The soccer player of the tournament, Bonghhulaa Bus and the top goal scorer, Timothy de Bruyn, both represented the Enlee Stevidoring (ES) factory.

Karel Emke was chosen as the soccer manager of the tournament also represented ES.

According to Executive Mayor Alderman of Bergriver Municipality, Ray van Rooy, it was a huge honour to host the annual event in their region.

“This tournament brings together hundreds of talented individuals from various walks of life to participate in a multi-sport tournament.

“We want to extend our warmest congratulations to all the teams who participated, especially those who won.

“Let’s continue to grow sports in our area and may it always unite us in a way that not much else can. Thank you to all the sponsors and role-players who contributed to making this day a great success,” he said.

According to Reggie Carolus, one of the tournament’s organisers, this event was founded by Dr Danie Craven, Dougie Deyers, Habbie Brand, Hilton Langley, Gert Koenana and many other West Coast sport pioneers.

Carolus previously explained the event began as a fun off-day activity for the fish factory workers, whether they could play rugby or not, and it turned out to be a huge success as teams were dressed in tracksuits and began to brag about their factories.
