Floating Ducks swim 1 010 km

Local ladies from Langebaan, known as the Floating Ducks, swam for 88 days to “help save” the Langebaan Lagoon.

The Floating Ducks took to the water most mornings in a bid to raise funds for the group Save Langebaan Lagoon (SLL).

The group has been active since February 2017, with the aim of stopping a 884-ha aquaculture development zone (ADZ) in Saldanha Bay, which stretches into the Langebaan Lagoon.

The development, which forms part of national government’s Operation Phakisa, will see aquaculture projects such as mussel farms established.

SLL is taking its fight against the development to court, and thanks to the Floating Ducks SLL now has R68 099 for the fight.

The women took on sponsorships for a 1 km swim per day, for 88 consecutive days, representing 884 ha of the aquaculture site.

The swim kicked off on Tuesday 1 October last year and ended with a mass swim of Floating Ducks and their friends on Friday 27 December.

The Floating Ducks completed 920 km, while the other kilometres were completed by their friends.

“The Floating Ducks would like to take this opportunity to thank all their generous sponsors for making this such a successful adventure,” a statement from the group said.

“We really love Langebaan Lagoon, so please continue to support this worthy cause.”
