Fresh and healthy food for farms

Sustainable farming methods that help to preserve the environment as well as local community development are being put in place at the Rooihoogte citrus farm near Porterville.

The farm is run by SanLucar, which is an international premium brand for fruit and vegetables.

One example of the environmentally friendly initiatives that are being introduced to the farm is a “permaculture garden”, which stands for permanent agriculture.

“Through gardeners working on the project processes, a self-sustaining ecosystem is created that provides fresh and healthy food for the community living on the citrus farm,” explains Eugenie Grobler, who steers the community development journey at Rooihoogte.

She adds that as the residents cultivate the garden, the produce then gets sold at the Rooihoogte farm shop, which is also collectively owned by the farming community.

“The combination of a community-owned shop and garden makes sense. Not only can we provide top quality nutritious fruit and vegetables year round, we can also do this at a low cost,” according to Grobler.

The permaculture garden is still a young project but uses no chemical auxiliaries.

The garden however uses an organic fertiliser consisting of plant compost and chicken manure.

Kobus Kritzinger, (a permaculture expert who leads the permaculture-training project at Rooihoogte) explains that certain herbs and vegetables between the other crops also helps to keep pests away.

“The diversity of plant species with different smells and textures confuse pests and lessen their impact,” says Kritzinger.

Grobler adds that the permaculture garden in Rooihoogte is still in its infancy. “However, the progress is encouraging and inspiring for everyone involved. We still have a lot to learn and are very interested in exchanging experiences”.
