Garden in Stompneus Bay

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic residents of Stompneus Bay made history on Friday 26 March and Saturday 27 March with their new garden.

A group of women from the community, together with ward councillor Sharon Scholtz and aspirant candidate Charmaine Laubscher from Langebaan Urban Garden, established an urban garden in the area.

The initiative was spearheaded by community activist Patty Ponie, who realised the need for food security in her community and rallied the women from the community.

In systematic fashion she contacted the councillor and applied for ground from the Saldanha Bay Municipality for use as a community garden.

This response to a real communal need brought members of the community together to work, planting vegetables to distribute in their area.

Training was given by Farming God’s Way mentors, Caroline and Ron Holl, together with Carl Schmidt, in how to plant the way God intended with what you have to gain a prosperous crop.

This is the third round of training given by Farming Gods Way, trainers in the West Coast District.

Langebaan Urban Garden, Hopefield and now Stompneus Bay will soon be able to reap what they sowed the past few weeks.

The community is thankful to the Farming God’s Way team, Agriculture MEC Ivan Meyer, all individual stakeholders for establishing these farms to assist in ensuring food security.
