Good rains lead to strongly flowing rivers

WEST COAST – The storm over the past weekend which continued into the week, left some locals without roofs but also helped to bolster dam levels.

Rain and strong winds made landfall Monday morning.

Multiple structures, including schools, were damaged throughout the province. Locally minor damage and localised flooding in low-lying areas, were reported. A few informal dwellings had roofs blown off and some homes were flooded.

According to Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, no fatalities or injuries had been reported although emergency services remained on high alert throughout the day.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) also warned of rough seas.

“Heavy rain, localised flooding and damaging winds can continue to be expected during the course of the day as the storm moves across the province from West to East. Detailed damage assessments will be conducted when it is safe and the storm had passed. In the event of any emergency the number to remember to call in the Western Cape is 112,” Bredell explained.

Despite the bad news the weather brought, some dam levels in the province increased by 8% from last week to 53%. On Monday the Berg River Catchment, from which the local region gets its water, was 68,48% full, compared to 78,01% at the same time last year.
