‘Increase visibility of officials’

Road safety and security in Vredenburg’s main road seems to be a hot topic among road users in the West Coast.

This was in light of an accident involving a vehicle and a taxi that occurred on Friday 27 September.

Weslander posed a question on their Facebook page as to whether the main road needs more traffic intervention by traffic officials.

According to Ethne Lawrence, spokesperson for Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM), it is their duty to enforce the traffic laws.

“Hence the municipality embarked on the decentralised staffing model to increase the visibility of traffic officials throughout the municipal area.”

She explains that the decentralised model will give effect to a new paradigm shift to be more productive in the enforcement of traffic laws.

“We also adjusted the working hours of officers to increase their visibility (earlier during the week and later over weekends).”

When asked whether the main road is becoming a hot spot for accidents or crashes, her response was that this is not the case.

“Accidents or incidents occur anywhere and everywhere accessible to road users, especially on public roads.”

According to Harry Lu, chairman of the Vredenburg Security Business Forum (VSBF), the presence of security and law enforcement will benefit businesses located in the main road.

“To have at least one traffic or law enforcement vehicle parked or patrolling in the main road would be helpful.”

He adds that the presence of law enforcement or traffic officers may reduce the driving speed of road users and the level of crime in the main road as well.
