It is safe to donate blood

The public is encouraged to continue to donate blood as there is a critical shortage.

Blood donors can rest assured that travelling to donate blood is considered as essential travel during the nationwide lockdown.

According to Marike Gevers, spokesperson of the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), they would like to appeal to all their healthy donors to please continue to donate blood and reassure them that the process is conducted in a safe manner.

“The WCBS would like to assure donors that donating blood is safe. The Coronavirus cannot be transmitted through a blood transfusion as respiratory viruses are generally not known to be transmitted by donation or transfusion,” explained Gevers.

“Blood donor screening, which includes travel self-deferrals, are already in place to prevent individuals who may be at risk of clinical respiratory infections from donating blood.

“We anticipate added pressure on the blood supply during Easter, Ramadan and the winter months and the added effects of the Coronavirus could see the number of eligible donors decrease in the following few months.”. The next blood donation clinic will take place in Langebaan on 15 and 16 April at the Dutch Reformed Church hall between 11:00 and 16:00.
