Masks for Madiba Day

Saturday 18 July is former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday and the annual day of service to honour his legacy.

Mandela Day is traditionally marked by giving 67 minutes of one’s time in the service of others. However, this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic it may be more difficult to spend time in care facilities, hospitals and homes because of the need to protect the vulnerable and social distancing.

These necessary safety measures do not mean people cannot work together in acts of kindness and of solidarity.

As a way to celebrate Mandela Day and fight the spread of Covid-19, Elvin Weimers and his sisters Elsabe and Amelicia are launching a #MasksForMadiba awareness campaign.

Elvin explains the aim of the campaign is to make children more aware of the coronavirus while also providing them with cloth masks.

The group will be at St Andrew’s Primary on Friday (17 July) to hand out cloth masks and brief learners on the Covid-19 outbreak and the current state of play in the country, and how to recognise the danger signs.

“We are in the process of making cloth masks and will donate 67 masks to the cause,” Elvin said.

“We encourage everyone to challenge their friends, family members and colleagues to get involved in the project and donate too. We appeal to our friends and relatives who are able to, to donate material/cloth or a mask or more in our #MasksForMadiba campaign.”
