Meet August’s Dog of the Month

Susan is August’s Dog of the Month after being liberated from a chained life and has finally been given the freedom to run and play as she pleases.

Susan is a small brindle staffie cross of two and a half years old, and has spent all her life tied to a chain in a yard, according to Brett Ellway, the chairperson of Langebaan Animal Care (LAC).

He says: “One of the most heartbreaking sights we encounter are dogs whose whole life is spent on a chain, which is often only one metre long and directly on their necks, cutting into their skin.

“We have taken her into the shelter, which is a big step in itself, as she must learn to mix with the other dogs and take her place in the pack”.

Ellway also explains that the dog is currently doing well and is exceptionally friendly with people as well as very energetic, and enjoys going for walks.

“With the care and persistence of our walkers, she is beginning to calm down and integrate with other dogs,” he says. “Every day she experiences and learns something new, and the hope is that someone will come forward to share and guide her on that journey.”

Ellway also mentions that LAC has launched the Hop2 Home Project, which helps to get the ownership of the animals “signed over” directly to the new owners.

“At LAC, we are committed to stopping this suffering and giving all animals a chance to live a happy life with owners who care for them,” he said.

. Last month’s Dogs of the Month, Ronnie and Nellie, are still desperately in need of a new home.

For more information, or any volunteers wishing to meet, walk or train the dogs at the shelter, can contact Ellway at 083 396 7198.

Local animal shelters are also encouraged to send their Dog of the month to Weslander at KeananLee.Harmse@media24.com.
