More danger on winter roads

Some road users may have concerns about the safety of various intersections on West Coast roads, which could prove to be dangerous this winter.

These road sections include the Langebaan Road intersection, the Hopefield/Vredenburg crossing and the St Helena Bay turn-off.

According to Desmond Paton, head of West Coast Provincial Traffic, the Langebaan Road intersection and the Hopefield/Vredenburg crossing, in particular, have been identified as hazardous locations by Provincial Traffic.

“The Engineering section is busy assessing its options in improve their safety,” he said. “This unfortunately doesn’t happen overnight.”

There is currently no update on the investigation into the St Helena turn-off, but he mentions Provincial Traffic is in constant contact with the engineers.

Paton adds that no information has been received that the Langebaan Road intersection will be closed once the new Saldanha Road is opened.

“I believe the intersection will stay open but it might change slightly,” he said.

The traffic chief also mentions it is important that road users practise due caution this winter when challenging circumstances affect driving.

“This time of year the West Coast experiences heavy mist and rain conditions,” he explained.

“Motorists are urged to keep their following distances, in line with the given circumstances, and make sure head lights are switched on.”

Paton stressed patience and care must be exercised when visibility on the roads is poor. “Abnormal loads will be common on the West Coast over the next few months, so please exercise caution and obey traffic officer’s instructions,” he said.
