New classrooms empty as learners attend school near hall

The parents of grade R learners at Middelpos Primary are fuming after their children missed a week of schooling because they were without a classroom.

Parents gathered outside the school on Friday afternoon (27 July) and demanded answers from principal Ntondo Mazula.

According to one parent they were told at the beginning of the year there was not a class for their children. Up until recently the class of more than 30 learners, received their lessons in a structure, down the road from the school at the local community hall.

“That class wasn’t ideal. The windows are broken and with the cold weather the kids were getting cold. It was also raining into the class. This is not right – his child is at the school, warm and comfortable in class but our children must suffer,” said a disgruntled mother, who asked not to be named.

Twelve angry parents waited for answers as local ward councillor Siyabulelo Mafenuka met with Mazula.

“We don’t understand, there are three empty classrooms on school grounds but now we are told the learners can’t use them because they haven’t been formally handed over. “We went to the local education department two or three times about the problem and still there is no solution. The principal has said the children will be in the classroom today (Friday), but come Monday we will still have the same problem,” Mafenuka said.

According to teacher Nosithembele Mazula more classrooms are needed for grade R, grade 3 and grade 4 classes. She said an application to the Education Department was done for six new classrooms but the school only received three additional prefab classrooms.

A meeting between the school and local circuit manager Avril Daniels was scheduled for Wednesday 1 August. The meeting was still underway at the time Weslander went to print.
