New fire trucks for air force

Air Force Base Langebaanweg welcomed two new state-of-the-art fire trucks which was sponsored by the South African Air Force crew combat any aircraft or any general fires which occur at the base.

The trucks were officially presented on Friday 13 March at the base.

According to the fire chief of AFB Langebaanweg, WO DF Bessinger, they had two different displays of the vehicles on the day.

“We’ve got two vehicles that were displayed today, of which one, the Medium Crash Tender F1 Aircraft, was a static display which squirts water, foam and dry powder and will be used to deal with aircraft fires. While the Hazardous Containment Vehicle can do rescue work as well and handle general fires and hazardous materials.”

He also explained the detailed process that the drivers of the fire-fighting trucks would have to undergo to man these vehicles.

“We start at the ground phase where you learn all the technical stuff and write the examinations to do your competency level. Once you pass that, you go onto the cyber simulator and after you’ve completed this phase you physically operate the vehicles itself.”

He adds that these measures are put in place to ensure that there are no injuries or unnecessary breakages.
