New kitchen for Steenberg’s Cove

Staff and learners of Steenberg’s Cove Primary are excited and grateful for their new school kitchen and dining area, which are currently being upgraded and renovated.

According to principal Virginia Vraagom, the hope is to launch the new facility in October.

The upgrade was funded by the Tiger Brands Foundation in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.

The St Helena Bay school was named the best implementer of the National Schools Nutrition Programme in the country in 2017.

As part of this award it won R1,3 million over a period of three years, which will be used for infrastructure projects.

The National Schools Nutrition Programme is a joint initiative by the Tiger Brands Foundation along with the Department of Basic Education.

According to Karl Muller, operations manager at the Tiger Brands Foundation, the foundation is currently implementing a breakfast project at schools, which provide learners with nutritious breakfasts to help improve their performance in the classroom as well as their well-being.

The foundation, which also implemented the breakfast project at Steenberg’s Cove Primary last June, has sought the expertise of a nutritionist to make sure that learners receive a balanced and healthy meal, Muller says.

“We are planning to have a group of volunteers that can cook the meals for the learners at the kitchen and learn good food preparation skills, and we hope that this education programme can also help make them more employable,” he said.

Muller added that one of the goals of the breakfast project is to encourage and improve the development and performance of the learners at the school, especially those from disadvantaged communities.
