Readers share water tips

Weslander has asked its readers to share a few water saving tips, and Doreen Bezuidenhout shared some of her tips via WhatsApp. You can also send your tips to 082 572 0453.

No more dishes:

. Eat straight from the braai! No pots or pans to wash.

. Cook various meals at once. This saves time and also means most pots and pans are washed in one go instead of nightly.

. As an alternative to washing dishes, make a solution of rinse-free dish soap and water to spray on lightly dirtied dishes and wipe down.

. Use “harvested” rain water in the home by using water purification tablets.

. If you do have to wash plates, pans, cutlery, etc, wipe mess and dirt off with paper towel, to make water less dirty.

. Vinegar can also be used for wiping and cleaning, with paper towels, without having to rinse down counters.

. Wash dishes in a container inside your sink so grey water can be used for flushing the toilet.

Stay clean and fresh:

. Stock up on baby wipes, instead of constantly washing.

. Use dry shampoo or baby powder to prolong the time between washing your hair.

. Keep clothes fresh for longer by making a solution of vinegar and water, or fabric softener and water, to spray on clothes then hang out to air.

.Use apple cider vinegar to naturally deodorise your armpits meaning less showers.

. Wear breathable fabrics like cotton to avoid odours developing from sweat and bacteria.

In the bathroom:

. After number 1, throw toilet paper into a separate, lined bin, in this way not clogging the toilet when you eventually flush. This will extend time between flushes with grey water.

. Use baking soda to control toilet paper odours if throwing toilet paper away.

. Fill toilet cistern with grey water. Use vinegar in the toilet and drains to help with any odours and bacteria.

. Instead of pouring water into the sink, pour it into a plastic tub, and one can re-use dirty water in the toilet.
