SAAF Association visits Air Force Base Langebaanweg

Thursday 6 June members of the West Coast branch of the SAAF Association visited the Air Force Base Langebaanweg.

The group received a hearty welcome from the General Officer Commanding, Brigadier General Mac Matanda, and the Base Command Council, during which tea and snacks were served.

The welcome was followed by presentations by GOC Langebaanweg Personnel Officer Major Christiaan Esterhuyse and the OC of the Central Flying School, Col Donovan Chetty. Brigadier General Matanda then commenced with the presentations.

As former serving personnel of the SAAF, association members found the presentations interesting and informative.

But the real focus was on the actual military flying training performed by the Central Flying School and supported by the rest of the base.

This training includes Ab Initio (the software command system) training and instructor flying training. The video of the Silver Falcons illustrating their flying skills also impressed the visitors. A definite highlight of the walkabout was a visit to the PC7 MkII Aircraft Simulator (Procedural Trainer) at the Central Flying School, where the capabilities of the simulator were demonstrated.

On the way to the officer’s mess for lunch the members visited the Memorial Wall where the SAAFA Weskus Branch also laid a wreath at the annual memorial service.

The officer’s mess, in true tradition, treated SAAFA members to a splendid meal, while a fire in the fireplace and good company ensured a warm and cosy environment.

Many treasured stories of days gone by were recalled and shared, as were current SAAF successes.

This visit to AFB Langebaanweg may well be long remembered by those who were there.

GOC AFB Langebaanweg and its personnel were thanked by the SAAFA West Coast Branch for the continued good relationship between the base and the association.

“We are so proud to be associated with such a prestigious Air Force Base. Together we will be great,” a spokesperson from the base said.
