Saldanha gets air service

Business owners and investors looking to cut time in traffic to attend their meetings can take to the skies as Chamber Air was officially launched at the Saldanha airstrip on Tuesday 29 October.

This service will offer flights from Cape Town to Saldanha in 40 minutes.

According to Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (CCOCI) website, Chamber Air is defined as a facilitation service for air travel bookings for unscheduled short haul routes, with Saldanha making history as the first destination to launch this service.

“This might seem an unlikely initiative for a Chamber of Commerce, but it makes a lot of sense. Saldanha and its Industrial Development Zone, for example, will be of great importance to business in the city and we need to build new and efficient links between these two port destinations.”

A return flight between Saldanha and Cape Town will cost R2 999 per person for those who belong to a Chamber of Commerce, with luggage limited to 15 kg per person.

This discounted fare is open to members of all Chambers of Commerce that meet the basic criteria.

Passengers who do not belong to a business chamber will have to fork out more.

Executive Mayor of Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM) Ald Marius Koen mentioned that this event was a historic and important occasion for the West Coast. “This a whole new form of transport and we’re very excited from the municipality’s side that Saldanha Bay is the first one on the map to be able to do that.

“We tend to have very good growing relationships with Cape Town and I think that’s important that there’s a closer linkage with the two. I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of flights in the air and extensions to this airfield.”
