St Helena Bay clean-up

Approximately 50 St Helena Bay residents managed to fill more than 140 rubbish bags during a clean-up drive on Saturday 13 July.

According to Anne Todd, member of United Against Litter (UAL), the rubbish was collected from the open area near the entrance to the Sandy Point harbour and from the main parking area.

Previously Weslander reported on another clean-up drive, which was held at the Da Gama Monument in St Helena Bay on Saturday 15 June.

“The Da Gama Monument is an historic site and one of the tourist attractions of St Helena Bay, and we need to keep it clean,” said Todd.

On the day, the UAL members also received a generous donation in the form of a mesh lighthouse, which will be used for the collection of plastic bottles.

“Leon Mouton, CEO of Sea Safety Training Group, did the honours of handing over the mesh lighthouse, which was made by Sea Safety Maintenance Manager, Attie Marais.”

Todd added that the lighthouse had been secured in the main parking area of the harbour, which she described as a novel way of collecting plastic bottles.

Asked what she hoped to achieve with the clean-up drives, Todd said: “Apart from leaving a cleaner area after each clean-up, we also wish to create awareness of the amount of rubbish lying around locally and the worldwide problem of plastic pollution, which has devastating effects on the environment and on wildlife.”

She had a special thanks for the day’s participants and volunteers.
